If you find happiness in being fair, that is a pleasure no one can take from you. However, if your happiness comes from owning something material, that object can be taken away, meaning it isn’t truly yours. It only belongs to you temporarily. The pleasures of the soul are truly yours, and nothing and no one can take them away. According to some traditions, not even death can strip you of these soul pleasures. Physical pleasures bring temporary joy, but not lasting happiness. There are other kinds of pleasures—the pleasure of fulfilling your duties, being useful to someone, making a difference in someone’s life, becoming more mature, and feeling more human and complete than you were in the past. There are two types of pleasures: those of the body and those of the soul. If you only seek bodily pleasures, your body might enjoy them, but your soul will remain in deep anguish. You can only satisfy half of your hunger this way, always feeling that something is missing, something is incomplete.
